FA is still down, DDoS is still commencing.

About 20 hours ago Fur Affinity went down due to a Distributed Denial of Service attack. The site was being flooded with traffic exceeding our bandwidth limits.

Since then, the website has been on-and-off, working sparsely and showing different anomalies when it did, as it has already been reported. Apparently the people behind this DDoS are still at it, and they render our servers completely inaccessible from the internet.

So until this attack stops, neither FA, nor FA's forums will be accessible. Guess this is that proverbial lump of coal FA got as a present for this Christmas, in advance, for all the bad things it has done in the year that nearly passed.

We apologize for this inconvenience, and any further updates will be posted here, since FA's forums became an unstable platform for relaying information.

[edit]
Fur Affinity is currently up and running, but we don't know for how long. In case of another wave of incoming traffic, i am afraid we would have to go offline again.

Sadly I doubt there is little they can do about some fat, no-life, chip eating cunt deciding he's going to wave around his seldom used penis and fuck with someone's website. Because they have no life...

I know I may have just described a typical furry just then too...

Sad fact of life is that there are always some sad fuckers out there who do this stuff because they have nothing else better to do...I would pity them but I can't get close enough because of the stench.

dont you mean "DDOS continues"
since if it already is down and already on it, why is "still commencing"? o_o

DoS attacks suck. I know firsthand. We had someone DoSing Puppybreak.com. I mean cmon! Its pictures of puppies!

Thankfully we had an awesome ISP who pulled some router voodoo and we never lost connectivity.

This is really awful, and I'm definitely missing the site :/
I wonder if they are trying to steal the domain name also.. *grrrr* ... I just wondered because if you look at those LiveJournal Snapshots popups in an entry (like a href="http://community.livejournal.com/furbuy/7612.html">this</a> one, it looks as if the main page is one of those generic ones. (??)
Seems like predators are always out there trying to mess with a good thing... *sigh* -_-

Dont apologise chap...you are not the one responsible...

When the culprit is found he or she should have their computer locked away and be made to actually go out and socialise with their fellow man for a while.

Actually, in the absence of FA being up (and I think it'd be taboo to advertise my own site on another site's "We're down!" message), take a look at [info]furryartdump for random art postings.

This reminds me of a situation once where a group of gaming servers were being DDoS'd. The attack was being routed from non-US territory, which somehow drew the attention of the FBI Cyberterrorism unit. Nothing panned out, but the fact that FBI agents came down to the humble little data center and collected evidence entertained me.

Either way, fun stuff... I guess, or rather GG.

I'm grateful that the FA peoplez are working on getting the site back up. I'm not going to bitch about loosing service to a site that I can go onto for FREE!

Come on people, they don't charge for anything on FA, you should be damn grateful for what you have and not BITCH when it's down.

I want double my money back :) that make me a 00.

You are so right.

"what are the admins going to do" Pfff, mabey they take their money and go enjoy something else in life.

Anyway I do like the service and hope it gets back up soon, in the mean while I got other things I can always be doing with the time.

I have been planning for FA to go offline again for the holidays since late November. As a result I recently started a "longer term" project that I will not be uploading until the New Year. In the future this will be my mode of operation when any holidays are coming up.... adopt, adapt and improvise.

Wouldn't it be simple just to drop any packets but HTTP packets and have a script block any IPs that make more than say 10 connections? They make scripts for APF, CSF, and iptables that do that sort of thing. Obviously if it's an ICMP flood, drop ICMP packets and so on? Not being a smartass or anything. I see it all the time as a Web Hosting Technician.

I have the base image, I have the 101 shouts, I just need to be unlazy and use Paint.net to combine the two.

I'm looking forward to finding out the IP addresses logged in the server log.

[info]kupok

December 24 2007, 10:11:41 UTC 4 years ago

In an effective DDos attack, those IP addresses are useless.

DDoS attacks need several compromised computers to be effective. Those IP address you'll find are mostly old grannies and kids who have no busness on the internet with unpatched, unprotected systems with tons of adware and spyware.

Whoever is responsible for this must be swimming in cash. As I understand it, botnets are not cheap. Are there any filtering rules at the server or router level, perchance?

No apologies necessary. It's just really sad that some jerk decided the best thing we could do with his life is try to tear down what others have worked hard for. We'll still be here when the shit storm passes. Our little fandom has survived such crap before.

Wouldn't you think that they have? Unfortunately, it's kind of Christmas Eve, and I'm sure getting a datacenter to respond on the eve of what is arguably one of the biggest holidays of our culture is, at best, a tad bit difficult.

You'd think if someone was going to try and shut down a site they'd at least pick something that would actually make a difference in the world, rather than a site like this which is just a nice fun little community.

[info]xipoid

December 24 2007, 18:55:47 UTC 4 years ago

Therein lies the beauty of the attack. Hit someone small enough that they won't draw much attention (and thus undesirable retaliation/repercussion) but big enough to vindicate the aggression.

I'm sure that attacking some website that made a difference in the world would lead to a very upset legal institution coming down on them.
