Why are confirmed hackers posting comments about what they've done on the site?

Why haven't these people been IP banned?

Why not just send hackers an invitation to come back and ruin something else?

Because Weasel is considerably better at coding than, oh, all of the other admins? Possibly put together? Thus, on the IRC when a new gaping flaw in the code is found it is posted to there quickly and thus allows it to be fixed quicker.

Seriously, these are the kind of people you /want/ to be on the beta server. But Jheryn seems to only want ineffective yes-men in positions of power, so they are stuck using the main FA site.

Although I'm not going to deny that annoying Jheryn (and the rest of the mods) is not part of it. I might even have some sympathy towards him if he hadn't, y'know, lied to the users and set me up as some sort of 'evol haxxor' in order to draw the attention away from his bad code. Oh yeah, and also first blaming each coding bug on hackers first. Seriously. In the news post archive, there is a series that goes like this: "Hackers broke in and deleted some people's messages, we're working on it," "We fixed teh security hole so no more deleted message should appear," and then a bit later "The message-deleting bug is showing up again, I've added a button that regenerates all your messages."

Wrong answer.

If you hack the site, you should be banned.

End of story.

Banning (and keeping up with lists of open relays to make it stick) remains the most effective way to stop hacking.

So how else would you advise to get the site's bugs patched? Jheryn has shown a surprising amount of bullheadedness when people say "Hey this isn't done right" or "Your code has bugs." The only thing that /has/ gotten Jheryn to respond (and then only to whine) is crashing the site via clever exploiting of the site's many bugs.

And yes, I suppose just banning anyone who is discovered to be hacking would stop that person from hacking the site from the same IP in the future. There are, however, many problems with this.

Firstly, and most important, is that just banning hackers and not fixing the bugs (which, yes, is what has been happening in the past) is a very very bad idea, because then people keep poking at the site and finding more bugs and more interesting ways to exploit previous bugs. The second is that Jheryn really sucks at banning. I got IP banned once, and it was just for my singular IP. A quick reset of the modem and bam, no more ban. And any competent hacker (or any less competent person who knows Weasel) can get into the FA database and unset the ban. Because as previously stated, FA has lots of unfixed bugs and Jheryn seems unwilling or unable to fix them.

Riiiiiight, this is all about fixing bugs.

That's why you people have caused FA to be taken offline and vandalized user's pages.

I think someone's suggested this before. Supposedly it's too easy to get around an IP ban, so there's no point in even setting one. Or something similarly convoluted. It doesn't make sense to me, anyway...

If you can "get around" an IP ban, it's either not a good enough IP ban or you're using an open proxy (which merits another ban).

But there's no reason to just let hackers come on in and have a merry time! Even if it's not effective... do something about it.

Open proxies are what I was referring to. Someone with the knowledge to hack into FA could probably find one that would allow them to work around even an IP ban.

It's kinda like the logic LJ uses for not allowing people to ban users from their LJ; one could just log out and work around the ban. So if a proxy is easy to find, an IP ban is just as useless. Though it does look kinda bad that FA isn't even trying...

Err... banning users on LJ is quite easy, and effective provided you disable anonymous commenting.

That REALLY shouldn't be able to work. The security situation at FA must be 100 times worse than even what I was thinking of...
